At 8am this morning, on 19th June 2009, around 50 iPhone 3G S fans were queueing patiently outside Apple’s flagship store on Regent Street to be the first to get their hands on Apple’s newest iPhone. The first iPhone 3G S sold was a 32GB white model which went to an unamed 19yr old student.
There were apparently queues outside most O2 stores as well, and a spokesman for the network operator said that around 10 times more customers had visited an O2 outlet this morning than would visit the shop on a normal day.
“We’ve sold more iPhones in the first two hours than we would sell handsets of any make in an average day” said the O2 spokesman. The company reported that black iPhones were outselling the white models by around three to one, and there have been no reports of stock shortages.
O2 has annoyed many of it’s current iPhone contract customers by demanding that existing iPhone contracts are paid off before an upgrade to the iPhone 3GS will be honored. This means customers, who signed up to get the previous model, the iPhone 3G, on the day of launch last July, must now pay off the remaining six months of their 18-month contract before they can buy the new iPhone 3GS.
The iPhone 3GS costs as much as £184.98 on some tariffs for the 16GB model, or £274.23 on some contracts for the 32GB version.
Of course, the iPhone 3GS is now being offered on this free iPhone site so us freebie hunters that had pre-ordered a free iPhone 3G S can expect delivery any day now. How’s that for a free upgrade loophole!?
The iPhone 3GS features a digital compass, three megapixel camera, video-recording capabilities and voice control. Consumers can also use the device to surf the internet, listen to music and play games, or choose from thousands of downloadable applications to customise the device, turning it into a restaurant finder, guide book, or language dictionary.
P.S. Is it the iPhone 3GS or the iPhone 3G S? Someone needs to make a decision!!

Seems like it should be the iphone 3G S. I was so pumped for the release today. I really think i’m going to hold off until Apple hopefully moved on from AT&T next year. A lot are saying that apple could go with Verizon.

Don’t misunderstand me, I love the iPhone, but I just think that for the majority of young people during this recession, it’s just too expensive. I know it sounds a bit cheap but I don’t think it would be outside of apples capabilities to release an iPhone ‘light’ wihcih costs less.
